Pillars of Literacy in SEL
At our January PROD, our staff met with our literacy consultant to learn about the Pillars of Literacy and how it connects our students with our communication and vocabulary in our Social Emotional Learning journey.
Developing vocabulary supports students to read with fluency, comprehend text and communicate their ideas and feelings with others, both orally and in writing.
The Pillars of Literacy include:
- Comprehension
- Concepts of Text
- Vocabulary & Background Knowledge
- Phonological Awareness & Phonics
- Decoding in Context
The pillars also represent the different components of literacy that should be a part of our K-7 classrooms. Each pillar plays an important role in nurturing students' growth as readers, writers, thinkers and communicators. The pillars are also connected and overlapping. Many of the literacy learning experiences in our classrooms provide opportunities to work with more than one pillar at a time.
